The dearth of great grocers in Harvard Square becomes just that much more intolerable when you step into crowded, aromatic Arax in Watertown. A short bike or bus ride away from the Square, Arax stocks all manner of wondrous Mediterranean and North African groceries and condiments at astoundingly low prices, as well as a selection of hookahs ($30-200). Turkish and African drinks abound in the cold box, and rosepetal jam, baklava ($8/lb), and candied fruit of every persuasion line the overflowing shelves. If you're in the market for raw almonds or gallon jugs of peppery, unfiltered Tunisian olive oil, Arax is the place to go. The store also stocks a wide range of hard to find fruit as it comes into season: sour plums, sweet lemons, quinces, and custard apples are all available here. Perhaps best of all, Arax sells fresh-baked pita and flatbreads in-store. Your rollup will never, ever, be the same again.
